Inside this work

At the AWS Summit in New York in July 2019, Dr. Werner Vogels’s keynote included the AWS Cloud Development Kit, which lets developers define their cloud infrastructure in familiar programming languages. I wrote the demo that showed it in action, and presented it live on stage.

I didn’t write the keynote, only my few minutes of it. It was also the first time I worked with Dr. Vogels, a couple of years before I would go on to lead his keynotes.

It very nearly didn’t make it. In rehearsal my demo ran to nine minutes in a five-minute slot, and the keynote lead was, quite rightly, having words with the demo team about it. Dr. Vogels overheard. He said the keynote needed more code, that he liked the demo, and that he would shorten his own part instead.

I will be forever grateful that they kept it. Now that I lead keynotes myself, I know that if a section ran four minutes over, I might well have cut it.

Backstage

A selfie of Martin pulling a delighted face in the demo prep room, with two colleagues behind him at a long table of laptops and cables. The demo team's group chat on the morning of the keynote. Under a photo of Martin in the make-up chair, colleagues wish him luck, and he replies: “I was here at 4 she has just finished constructing me a new face”. Martin in a pink floral shirt, grinning in a make-up chair backstage, with a table of make-up and paper towels behind him. A make-up artist powdering Martin's face backstage, with flight cases and a countdown clock behind them. The loading bay behind the stage at the Javits Center, lit under a red exit sign. A message on Martin's watch: “Martin, be prepared to how you will handle protests if they pop up in ur talk”. Martin's watch in the purple stage light, showing a heart rate of 81 beats per minute, down from 106 fourteen minutes earlier. The view from the side of the stage across a packed keynote hall, lit purple. A backstage selfie of Martin with Dr. Werner Vogels, who is giving a thumbs up in an “Encrypt everything” T-shirt.
